This Should Be Your Next Snare // Dialtune Review 2.0

I believe that at $599 the new Dialtune snare is the best deal in the drum industry right now. In this video I'll explain and demonstrate why, and give you a rundown on what's new in this V2 model. If you've never heard of this drum, this is also a good place to start. I started as a skeptic, but I've used this thing for years now and the best summary I can give is that it actually does what it...

    I’ve found that rimshots in medium to high tuned snares tend to bring out more overtones and in lower tuned snares they choke the drum somewhat. Close mic placement really matters with this as well, if I know I or the drummer I’m recording is going to play a lot of rimshots I’m going to place the snare mic a little higher up than I would otherwise

    Of course the shells matter. The material and it's denseness matters. The thickness matters, the bearing edge matters, the heads matter, the tuning matters. Never compare drums when they're dampened, always have them wide open and only use single-ply heads. This is the proper way to hear the tones they're capable of, whether or not you choose to muffle them later.

  • @11superawesomepandas
    @11superawesomepandas 8 дней назад

    I always use grilled cheese sandwiches bc the melted cheese helps dampen the sound better, but sometimes I go for the pastrami so the grease helps speed up my rolls.

  • @totigerus

    Why is two, or even one, gels sounding so much more dampened than a huge piece of tape?

    • @ColeParamore
      @ColeParamore 9 дней назад

      It's funny, I was wondering the same thing. I use both the tape and those gels all the time and never realized how potent the gels were in comparison. Even though the gaff is thick, I can only assume mass is the most important variable and that the gels are thicker.

    The two biggest issues I have with cymbal makers is the massive inconsistency you get from each individual cymbal, and how poorly they perform when on a stage or even in a large open room, compared to a studio or practice room. I have played many cymbals from the big 4 manufacturers, and Paiste hands down make the best cymbals. The cut and clarity you get is unmatched in a live setting and I don’t even need to comment when it comes to consistency.

  • @Stretchwreckedem469
    @Stretchwreckedem469 11 дней назад

    I’d really love to try this to record Metal and Hardcore drum tracks. I saw a video where someone used a contact mic on a snare and mixed it with the overheads and the contact mic. The snare wound up having a really cool snap to it with the right amount of EQ and a slight bit of clipping on the contact mic to create this kind of crushed effect to blend with the contact mic on the snare. A lot of my favorite recordings in the digital age of recording have always experimented with using clipping from the microphones to add a chaotic, frantic sound in their production, and after seeing this i’d love to apply what i’ve learned about contact mics to help add to their natural sound and bring out every tonal property that every part of the kit has to offer.

    The mixed sound from the shell was probably my favorite sound. It really brings out the “oomph” of the hardware itself, which can get lost in any mix. • @PilusPrimus
    @PilusPrimus 22 дня назад

    I find drum tone is a lot more about the ratio of fundamental tone to overtone than other instruments. In these examples I found the loudest fundamental compared to overtones are in order, 4 3 2 1 (to my ear, as recorded). In the overtone series, the fundamental tone is usually the loudest, but the question is by how much compared to the rest of the overtones. If you’re playing in a louder band where volume is an issue, you might want a stronger fundamental tone (“closed” sounding). If you’re playing in a lower volume group, or where a more complex tone is wanted and can actually be heard with more sensitive mixing perhaps, then the mahogany here would be a good choice (more overtones=more “open” sounding) Fwiw, I’ve always liked the very strong fundamental of maple properly tuned. The sustain of maple tends to be long but relatively quiet compared to the initial attack, giving maple a very punchy sound. Add more compression in the signal if you want more of that ring to come out. Also more plies=more mass=less energy dissipation is a contributing factor to increase the volume of the sustain phase. Hope this sparks a thought for someone - ymmv!

    I've used universal fit and ACS custom IEMs. The ACS custom ones are soft silicon and the ambient models actually come with a filter hole and a plug, so they are kind of IEMs and custom ear plugs in one. You won't need to pop them in and out as often and they won't be as isolating. If you want them to be, you can pop in the full stops. I had their old 3 driver model for a few months and found them too dark and heavy sounding so I actually went to a much cheaper single full range driver one. I'm now considering an upgrade to the 'ambient' full range or dual driver one. It's a matter of taste but I prefer clarity and definition over a ton of low end. So when I hear about these 6-12 driver models.... more is not necessarily more. My €0,02 at least.
